December 2019   |  Python

Whether you are superstitious or not, chances are that you have heard of Friday the 13th, a date considered to be filled with bad luck and dreadful things to come. In fact, it is considered to be so unlucky that the phobia of Friday the 13th has an official name: paraskevidekatriaphobia. Luckily for paraskevidekatriaphobics, there is a subreddit that will tell inform you whether it is Friday the 13th (because how else would you know?).

/r/IsTodayFridayThe13th is a very simple subreddit. Every day, the question “Is Today Friday the 13th?” is posted and the body of the post would either be “Yes.” or “No.” depending on whether it is indeed Friday the 13th on that date. Although this might look primitive on the surface, the most popular post on /r/IsTodayFridayThe13th currently has over 140k upvotes! Clearly, redditors appreciate the precious information coming from this ingenious public service.

I wanted to take this opportunity to take a look at the popularity of /r/IsTodayFridayThe13th over the years. Using the pushshift.io API, I was able to identify all the posts on subreddit in a given time frame. I then fed the post IDs into the Reddit API, where I can extract information about the post such as the number of upvotes and comments. Executing these set of steps for each post in the subreddit, I was able to create a visualization to show how the popularity of /r/IsTodayFridayThe13th posts changed throughout the lifetime of the subreddit.

After graphing the number of upvotes for each post, the pattern becomes obvious. Every time it is Friday the 13th, the popularity that post skyrockets. What is more interesting are the smaller jumps, caused when users reference /r/IsTodayFridayThe13th on popular comments or popular subreddits.

For example, on January 19, 2018, /u/therealmadhat posted on the subreddit /r/ofcoursethatsathing, causing the /r/IsTodayFridayThe13th post to reach more than 13k upvotes. On July 25, 2018, /r/IsTodayFridayThe13th also received a similar bump when /u/orchumaro nominated the subreddit as the weirdest subreddit through a question on /r/AskReddit.

I also wanted to point out that every April Fool's Day, /r/IsTodayFridayThe13th is wrong, which causes a miniscule spike as well.

You can see a similar pattern with the number of comments per post.
